We are Cherishers 811

Cherishers 811 CIC is rooted in rural Staffordshire and provides care and support in that area. We truly give a voice to those who need care in our community. We deliver activity in areas experiencing social and economic deprivation, as a rural community and focus on support for disabled people, and those from lower socio-economic groups. We empower the Elderly & Disabled to stay active while living with a disability.  We respond to the community needs by providing focused care, community, and sports therapy activities for free, on demand.

We provide many activities including in person anti-loneliness events and keep them active, engaged and connected! We provide care, companionship, a careline for ongoing communication, address digital poverty so they can stay connected with friends and family; and also therapies and adapted sports therapies to keep everyone active.

We provide home care, shopping, collecting prescriptions and sports therapy activities such as Adapted Chair Based Aerobics, Adapted Zumba, Adapted Pilates, adapted cycling and Stretching for The Elderly. We also offer book clubs, lunch clubs, green therapy, yarn bombing and creative pursuits. We teach digital skills to promote independence, combat isolation and loneliness.  Our befrienders build relationships of trust so care is delivered through understanding individual needs.

What we do currently...

Cherishers provides care, companionship and communication to the elderly and vulnerable in Staffordshire as a free community service.

Our adaptive sport activities and befriending overcome social isolation and those in who attend our wellbeing room come together to participate in arts and sports therapies.

Our yard can host people for adaptive art/sports activities but we can increase event frequency. We will host events to combat loneliness and build sustainability awareness.

We will offer home care, shopping, collecting prescriptions and sports therapy activities such as Adapted Chair Based Aerobics, Adapted Zumba, Adapted Pilates, adapted cycling and Stretching for The Elderly. We also will provide book clubs, lunch clubs, green therapy, yarn bombing and creative pursuits. We teach digital skills to promote independence, combat isolation and loneliness.  Our befrienders support those attending through understanding individual needs.

We understand that People need to be connected. We are going to run in-person events so that no one feels alone or isolated. Allowing them to connect with others as part of our events and clubs and enabling carers to get a well-earned break from their demanding roles. With the terrible economic impact, we have more demand for our therapies and classes, our clubs are always hugely popular and we need to provide more space so that more people can attend and we can run them more regularly.

What we can do with your help

Cherishers support the vulnerable-many aged 60-80+. We keep them active, engaged and connected! The funding will expand our work, providing a careline for ongoing communication, addressing digital poverty so they can stay connected with friends and family; and adapted arts classes and sports therapies to keep active.

We teach digital skills to promote independence, combat isolation and loneliness.  Our befrienders build relationships of trust so care is delivered through understanding individual needs.

We help build community resilience and connectivity reaching those desperate for support, isolated, mentally vulnerable and often elderly or with caring demands of young families.

The economic situation means that people are not able to afford the care they deserve, they are also not able to afford additional therapies that can improve their mobility and wellbeing. Health and financial poverty are closely related issues, which both lead to worsened health outcomes as well as isolation and mental health issues. The economic issues from Covid mean more people need free yet compassionate care and companionship alongside digital poverty support.

With unprecedented rises in demand, including people not being able to pay for the shopping they need which we have collected. We cannot turn away people requesting help and we know the financial struggle will get worse – more need help. We need to continually invest and adapt to future Covid-secure processes.

People need to be connected.

We need YOUR HELP to continue to utilise our community shop space so it is a welcoming and sociable place, Covid secure and accessible to everyone. We continue to refurbish unusable space and bring it into use.

You are helping us 'Build Back Better' after the pandemic, by addressing the mental wellbeing and health of vulnerable people, enabling them to participate in cycling and sports activities in a safe space.  Our adaptive sport activities have been a great way to overcome social isolation and something that people of all ages can get involved with.

We also have our amazing clubs including lunch club, book club and yarn bombing - such activities are even a good way for those in who attend our wellbeing room to come together and participate on a regular basis.

We are running more in-person events again to allow more people to meet and enjoy each other’s company.

Some of the adaptive sports we provide:

•    Adapted Chair Based Aerobics

•    Adapted Volleyball: Using a fabric covered inflatable ball and bunting in place of an official net.

•    Adapted Weightlifting: using resistance exercises using foam pool noodles, and the use of everyday objects such as water bottles as hand weights.

•    Adapted Boccia: modified them for older adult settings, by using of bean bags in place of specialist bowling balls.

•    Adapted Zumba

•    Adapted Pilates

•    Adapted Cycling

•    Stretching for The Elderly

•    Art classes

•    Yarn bombing

•    Lunch clubs

We now need your help to make this happen at a larger scale - Not only do we want to keep everyone COVID secure, we want to continue to develop our sports and wellbeing therapies so we can offer them to more vulnerable people.

We are also providing support for carers who are amazing in their support of others. We will make free therapy sessions available for carers for a facial or a massage in our welling room. This support will last 9 months.

Our Target

Our yard can host people for adaptive art/sports activities but we can increase event frequency. We will host events to combat loneliness and build sustainability awareness.

Our adaptive sport activities and befriending overcome social isolation and those in who attend our wellbeing room come together to participate in arts and sports therapies

We can host sports therapy, Green therapy, Pilates, mental wellbeing and outdoor recreation focused on the disabled and elderly who want to feel in a 'safe space' whilst exercising.

Monies raised will be used as follows:

We will resource a phone careline £7200 for 12 months so they can provide befriending and advice in people’s homes through an environment of trust and care.

We will spend £24250 on sport therapy, art classes and art materials led by a trained art therapist for 50 specialist sessions /£485 each and we will make £6350 of free therapy sessions available for carers for a facial or a massage in our welling room. This support will last 9 months.

In addition to our art and sports classes, we will also 4 special in person events to celebrate the Jubilee year which will all help with combatting loneliness and isolation, each event has carers and the ability to collect participants in our vehicles and costs £3000 each so events total is £12000.

This will extend our capacity to host sports and creative therapies supporting mental wellbeing, and outdoor recreation focused on the disabled and elderly who want to feel in a 'safe space' whilst exercising.

Monies raised will fund several aspects of our work - we will host 4 separate events combatting loneliness during the summer, Christmas / New Year and Easter for up to 40 people each time. Our events allow full wheelchair and disability access.  We will provide sports equipment suitable for the disabled and elderly including cycles and we will resource our careline with wellbeing advisors.

We are looking to develop an increased range of sports therapies so more elderly and vulnerable people can benefit from sport.  We are targeting the purchase of adapted bikes so that these can be used within our new space and the maintenance of unused bikes so that people can find their way back to cycling.

This funding will allow us to increase the number of spaces available for our arts and sports therapy classes and wellbeing clubs and events -  Help us to make our dreams a reality!

Why support us - A word from our cherished community:

“Cherishers what a kind-hearted, selfless and compassionate team! My mother and I both contacted COVID and was rushed into hospital (intensive care). Sadly, my mother died, and I survived however I was left physically disabled from the disease. After surviving Covid and coming home following 3 months in hospital you provided me with the support to rebuild my life! Yet nothing has been too much for you… from Hospital appointments, doctor trips, cleaning my home, picking up my prescriptions and doing my shopping! I can honestly say that without your friendship and services I don’t think I would have wanted to face the world anymore! I am able to move on from the loss of my Mother knowing that I have a new family with the team at Cherishers who genuinely care THANK YOU”

On behalf of Cherishers for all of your support - it means so much!
